Germany started increasing the number of international students who are enrolling to different higher educational institutions. International students’ enrolment in German higher education institutions grew by 8% in 2021/22 academic year according to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Approximately 350,000 students have been enrolled to different higher educational institutions of Germany in the year of 2021/22. This 8% enrollment growth has been marked after a 1.5% year-over-year gain in 2020/21. This latest report of DAAD also found that the number of international students in Germany increased even through the pandemic, in part due to a significant number of existing international students extending their study programs.
This growth brings Germany to top five leading study abroad destination globally and popular study destination for international students. “Study in Germany” is getting more attractive and gaining the popularity among those who are looking for study abroad because of affordability, employment opportunities, stay back opportunities, permanent resident friendly policies etc.
China and India are top senders of international students to Germany. China remains the top sender of students (40,000) but Chinese commencements fell by 5% in 2021/22. By contrast, the number of first-year Indian students increased by 33% in 2021/22 and there were 34,000 Indian enrolments in total in 2021/22.This clearly indicates that Germany is growing as best study destination for Indians also. These increased numbers of Indian students were helping to drive this recent growth of international students in Germany. Since 2017-18, the number of Indian students has risen by 65 percent to around 28,500, while growth in the number of incoming Chinese students has slowed.
